Spiritual retreat

"Spiritual leadership and listening" with Father Francisco Ramírez Yáñez - President of FIUC - Program in Spanish and English

An experience to renew the heart of leadership

This retreat is designed as a time of pause, silence and encounter: with God, with oneself and with others. Over the course of three days, participants will be invited to delve deeper into the spiritual dimension of leadership, discovering the power of attentive listening and shared discernment.

Under the guidance of Fr. Francisco Ramírez Yáñez, we will experience a journey that combines prayer, reflection and fraternity, inspired by the Gospel figures of Christ the servant, Elijah on Mount Horeb and the disciples of Emmaus.

Fr. Francisco Ramírez Yáñez was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on 12 June 1955. He studied philosophy and theology at the Diocesan Seminary of Guadalajara. Subsequently, between 1990 and 1992, he obtained a licentiate in theology of marriage and family at the John Paul II Institute of the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.

In 1994, he was appointed Episcopal Vicar for the Southern Peripheral Zone of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara. Between 2004 and 2005, he served as Prefect of Studies at the Pontifical Mexican College in Rome, an institution of which he was Rector for two consecutive terms (2005–2008 and 2008–2011). During those years, he also presided over the Association of Rectors of the Pontifical Gregorian University (ARPUG). Since 2012, Father Ramírez Yáñez has been Rector of the UNIVA System – Universidad del Valle de Atemajac, a Catholic institution of higher education with a broad academic and pastoral outreach in Mexico.

In August 2025, he was elected President of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (FIUC). In this role, he continues to promote dialogue between faith, culture and science, as well as the evangelising mission of Catholic universities around the world.

General programme

Day 1 – Welcome and opening – Friday 8 May

An afternoon of welcome, prayer and first encounter with the theme.

We will meditate on ‘Spiritual leadership in the manner of Christ the servant’ (Jn 13), in an atmosphere of silence and reconciliation.

Day 2 – Deepening listening and discernment - Saturday 9 May

A full day dedicated to listening to God, to the community and to the signs of the times.

Through biblical meditations, dialogue groups, and moments of silent adoration, we will learn to cultivate a listening that transforms the way we govern and accompany.

Day 3 – Sent as leaders who listen - Sunday, 10 May

A morning of synthesis

After the Mass of thanksgiving, each participant will be invited to make personal and institutional commitments to live a more humble, synodal and hopeful leadership.

Features of the retreat

  • Liturgical simplicity: Daily Mass, Compline and silent adoration.
  • Listening as a common thread: Listening to God, to the community and to the Church.
  • Spiritual leadership: Discerning together, governing by serving, walking in synodality.

An invitation

Only a leader who knows how to listen can guide in the Spirit.’
